Transformers

To connect electrical networks of different voltage levels and transport power with little loss, requires transformers and substations. An important feature of a transformer is that it has a high efficiency (approx. 99.5%) and therefore virtually no power loss during transport.

Distribution

Transformers are generally used for different voltage levels and for multiple purposes. The main purpose is the transmission of large powers often via high voltage with a power transformer, or the distribution of smaller capacities via medium voltage with distribution transformers. But in addition to the aforementioned applications, the traction transformer  is another example of a transformer being used for traction operation to power the overhead lines of trams or trains. In this case, the windings of the transformer are designed such that an almost DC voltage is created after rectification.

Protection

Measuring and protecting your network is done with measuring transformers. When measuring the current and voltage of your network, you can also use it to protect it against short-circuit currents while also measuring energy consumption. In a grid configuration where the star-point is not earthed, an earthing transformer (zig-zag) offers a solution. This could also include the use of your own operating transformer of, for instance, 250kVA in combination with zig-zag winding, which can withstand an earth leakage current of e.g. 1000A – 5sec.
